One of the heaviest actions of the Vietnam WarĀ involving Australian and Viet Cong forces occurredĀ on the 18th August 1966. The engagement beganĀ when part of the 1st Australian task force encounteredĀ the Viet Cong and local forces in a rubberĀ plantation near the village of Long Tan.
The Royal Australian Mint will mark the 50thĀ anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan with theĀ release of an al/bronze uncirculated 5 dollar. TheĀ reverse depicts a representation of the cross raisedĀ in the Long Tan plantation and the scene of the battle.
