On the 4th June 1629 the VOC Batavia was shipwrecked on Morning Reef off the coast of Western Australia on her maiden voyage from Texel Holland to the Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia).

Approximately half of the survivors were ferried off the ship and landed on Beacon Island with some food and very little water. The ships main cargo consisted of coins and antiquities including 341 people on board. Some of the ship wrecked coinage which were salvaged are available to view at the museum of Western Australia.

Struck by the Royal Australian Mint dated 2015 this 99.9% pure silver one ounce five dollar proof depicts an image of the VOC Batavia on her maiden voyage.
