$5 2000 Olympic - Echidna & Flora Silver Proof

ECHIDNA & TEA TREE - Second quality case

A three year joint program the Royal Australian Mint and The Perth Mint struck sixteen different 99.9% pure silver five dollar proofs for the Sydney Olympics dated 2000. Each coin has the edge lettering GAMES OF THE XXVII OLYMPIAD.

Stuart Devlin's original concept description:

The centre will feature the echidna or spiny anteater. The border surrounding this feature will be based on the tea-tree.

His comments on the final design:

'I have been fascinated by the echidna ever since I used this amazing creature in my designs for the Australian decimal coinage. Its defence position of lying on its back with its claws up make it ideal for a coin design and the spines add great richness. The beautiful simplicity of the flowers of the tea-tree always remind me of picnics by the sea when I was a child. The flowers and leaves are ideal for a border and add to the richness of the central feature.'
