This note is the second 'Next Generation' note to be issued, following the new $5 notes introduced in 2016, incorporating a number of significant changes to Australia's polymer banknotes.

Key aspects of the previous design have been retained but a range of innovative security features have been added, including a distinctice top to bottom clear window, holographic effects on the elements contained in the window and a 'rolling colour' effect over the Sulphur Crested Cockatoo as the light angle is altered. A new 'tactile' feature has been introduced to assist vision-impared people to recognise the note.

The number of digits in the serial number following the prefix has been increased from 6 to 7, a move designed to reduce the complexity of serial number ranges assigned to notes issued in a particular year.
